Overview of the TaxAct Class Action Settlement
A $14,950,000 class action settlement has been reached with TaxAct over allegations of privacy violations affecting customers who used TaxAct’s services to file their taxes. TaxAct is a well-known online tax preparation software, similar to TurboTax.
The lawsuit was initiated by TaxAct users who claim that their personal and financial information was shared with third parties, such as Facebook and Google, without their consent. TaxAct denies any wrongdoing, and the settlement seeks to resolve these allegations and avoid further legal costs.
Eligibility for Payout
To qualify for a payout, you must be part of one of the following Settlement Classes:
- Individuals who used a TaxAct online do-it-yourself Form 1040 tax filing product and submitted a tax return between January 1, 2018, and December 31, 2022, using a U.S. postal address.
- Spouses of users who filed a joint tax return during that same period.
Exclusions apply to those who filed for arbitration by January 9, 2024, or meet other specific criteria, which are detailed on the TaxAct class action administration website.

Potential Compensation

- California Subclass Members: 6 points
- Nationwide Class Members: 3 points
- California Married Filing Jointly Subclass Members: 2 points
- Nationwide Married Filing Jointly Class Members: 1 point
The value of each point will be determined by dividing the Net Settlement Fund by the total points assigned. Additionally, if you are part of this class action settlement, you may receive the TaxAct Xpert service for free for the 2024 tax year.
