Overview of the $152.2 Million Tuna Class Action Settlement
A settlement of $152,200,000 has been reached with leading tuna producers in the U.S. over allegations of price fixing that led to higher consumer prices for tuna. The lawsuit claims that from June 2011 to July 2015, companies such as Chicken of the Sea, Bumble Bee, and StarKist conspired to artificially raise the prices of packaged tuna, violating U.S. antitrust and unfair competition laws.
Total Settlement Amount
The settlement total is $152.2 million, which includes:
- $130 million from StarKist
- $6 million from Bumble Bee Foods (Lion Capital)
- $16.2 million from a prior Chicken of the Sea (COSI) settlement
Tuna Companies Involved in the Settlement
- Chicken of the Sea (COSI): This major canned tuna brand participated in the lawsuit and was part of the previous “COSI Settlement,” which provided $16.2 million in consumer benefits.
- StarKist: Another key player in the canned tuna market, StarKist has agreed to pay $130 million to resolve the class claims.
- Bumble Bee / Lion Capital: Bumble Bee Foods, also implicated in the class action, was formerly owned by Lion Capital, which will pay $6 million as part of the settlement.
