What is the West Virginia Lipitor Antitrust Settlement?
A $17 million settlement has been reached with Pfizer Inc. and Ranbaxy Inc. over allegations that they conspired to delay the release of a generic version of Lipitor, a popular cholesterol-lowering drug, thereby violating federal antitrust laws.
West Virginia’s Attorney General filed the lawsuit, accusing the pharmaceutical companies of engaging in anti-competitive practices that prevented generic Lipitor from entering the market, leading to inflated consumer prices.
This class action, brought under the West Virginia Antitrust Act and the West Virginia Consumer Credit and Protection Act, aims to resolve these claims and compensate West Virginia residents who paid higher prices for Lipitor.
What is Lipitor?
Lipitor (atorvastatin) is a widely used medication for lowering cholesterol and triglycerides. A statin, Lipitor works by reducing cholesterol production in the liver and is commonly prescribed to prevent heart disease, strokes, and other cardiovascular issues, particularly for people with high cholesterol or related risk factors.
What is the Total Settlement Amount?
The total settlement amount is $17 million, divided between Pfizer and Ranbaxy as follows:
- Pfizer: $8,750,000
- Ranbaxy: $8,250,000
