If you owned or leased certain 2011–2014 GM vehicles in California, Idaho, or North Carolina as of May 23, 2022, you may be eligible for a payment of at least $2,149 from a $150 million class action settlement.

Why the Lawsuit?

The lawsuit claimed that General Motors LLC sold vehicles with defective piston assemblies in LC9 engines, causing excessive oil consumption and possible engine damage or failure. GM denies wrongdoing but agreed to settle.

Who’s Eligible?

You may qualify if:

  • You owned or leased one of the following GM vehicles with an LC9 engine, manufactured on or after Feb. 10, 2011:
    • Chevrolet: Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban, or Tahoe (model years 2011–2014)
    • GMC: Sierra, Yukon, or Yukon XL (model years 2011–2014)

AND:

  • You were a current owner or lessee as of May 23, 2022, in one of these groups:
    • California class: Vehicle purchased/leased new in California
    • Idaho class: Vehicle purchased/leased from a GM-authorized dealer in Idaho
    • North Carolina class: Vehicle purchased/leased in North Carolina

Note: You’re not eligible if your vehicle had upgraded piston rings installed for free under warranty or if you opted out of the class after the May 2022 notice.

How Much Can You Get?

  • Minimum payout: $2,149
  • Final payment may be higher depending on total approved claims and deductions for fees and expenses
  • Payments will be divided equally among eligible claimants

How to Claim

Most eligible class members don’t need to file a claim — payment will be automatic if the court approves the settlement.

Exceptions:

  • If you received a notice instructing you to complete the North Carolina identification form, you must submit it.
  • All claimants must provide a VIN.
  • To avoid 24% IRS backup withholding, submit a W-9 form (online or by mail).
