What is the U-Haul Data Breach Class Action Settlement?
A $5,000,000 class action settlement has been reached with U-Haul over allegations that a data breach exposed personally identifiable customer information. This settlement is part of a series of data breach settlements in 2024.
The lawsuit concerns two data breaches that occurred in September 2022 and December 2023. Unauthorized parties are believed to have accessed U-Haul International Inc.’s files containing sensitive customer data, including names and driver’s license numbers. Plaintiffs have accused U-Haul of negligence, breach of implied contract, and violations of consumer protection laws. Although U-Haul denies any wrongdoing, they have agreed to settle to avoid further litigation costs and risks.
What is the Total Settlement Amount?
The total settlement amount is $5,085,000. This is a non-reversionary settlement fund, meaning any unclaimed funds will not revert to U-Haul but will instead be distributed among valid claimants.
How Do I Qualify for a Payout?
To qualify, you must have received a Notice of Recent Security Incident letter related to either of the data breaches and lived in California at any time during the incidents—specifically between November 5, 2021, and April 5, 2022, or around December 5, 2023.
How Much Can I Get Paid?
If eligible, you may receive an estimated $100 from the settlement fund. This amount could be adjusted pro rata based on the total number of valid claims and after accounting for legal fees and other expenses. If fewer claims are submitted, payments per claimant could potentially exceed $200.
How Do I File a Claim?
To file a claim, complete and submit a Claim Form online or download it for mailing. The form is also included in the postcard notice sent to class members. Detailed instructions are provided on the form. The deadline for submitting your claim form is October 15, 2024.
Do I Need Supporting Documentation to File a Claim?
The Settlement Administrator will assess each claim’s validity and may request additional information. Claims without timely provided documentation may be deemed invalid and not eligible for payout once the settlement is finalized.
